Narwal Freo X Ultra
A highly-rated, highly-functional Gen 4 robot vacuum and mop that has a new approach to design, the Freo X Ultra is a well-built machine. The price of $1400 might be difficult to swallow, but it's often on sale to make it more affordable. The unit looks great and the base station occupies just a small space in the corner of a room.
The design of this robot is a solution to some of the issues we've experienced with other robotic mop and vacuum cleaners, such as brushes that get tangled up in hair, and the vacuum brush not being able to reach the bare flooring beneath furniture. The sweeping performance on floors and carpets is also impressive. The vacuum and mop have an excellent level of debris collection and the mop will quickly saturate bare flooring.
The mops also use an advanced system for cleaning around the edges of furniture and around walls. The robot is able to effortlessly avoid obstacles like toys, food bowls and backpacks. But it can get stuck or become entangled with smaller and flatter objects, such as shoelaces USB cables, and pens.
We used this robot to clean and mop a mixture of pile carpet tiles, FLOR carpet and hardwood floors within a large, open house floor plan. With FREO Mind enabled, it vacuumed and mopped a 90m2 area in about 170 minutes which is about average for Gen 4.
The robot is distinguished by a variety of characteristics. The Freo X Ultra has a array of sensors, software and hardware enhancements designed to keep it at the top of its game. It promises 3.5 hours of autonomy for areas up to 260m2.
Freo's application lets you modify various functions, such as how often the robot goes to its base station. You can also change the frequency of mopping as well as the power level (silent or intelligent) or the mopping's humidity. The app can identify heavily stained areas and design an appropriate cleaning route. It can also dispensate detergent, or raise the carpet pads.
Other impressive features include a simple-to-read display on the robot’s underside and a dock door that is easy to open. The Freo X Ultra vacuum and mop is ideal for homeowners and apartment dwellers who wish to cut down on chores and keep their homes clean.
Miele Scout RX3
Miele is not a slouche in the world of robot vacuums and has a reputation for quality and innovativeness. The new Miele robot is designed to take cleaning performance to a new level with its advanced features.
The RX3 has a dual-suction system, intelligent mapping with 3D mapping as well as cameras that send an image in real-time to your smartphone. Its powerful four-stage cleaning system provides excellent dust removal on hard and carpet flooring, while the intuitive side brushes that swing out and dual suction channels remove dust from corners. Its 8.5 cm height allows it to reach under low furniture. Front cameras and infrared sensor aid in navigating obstacles, thresholds, and obstructions with ease.
In our test of how it cleaned baking soda near corners and baseboards the Scout RX3 was impressive. Its suction of 2,500 Pa was a little weaker than other robots, but it was able to move quickly and was quiet. It didn't clean, however and its cleaning pads were fiddly to attach and couldn't cope with dirt that had dried on.
Its app lacks advanced features such as multiple cleaning modes or automated scheduling. It does work with Alexa however, its voice controls aren't particularly precise or responsive. It's also difficult when it comes to navigating its way back to the charging station after a run -- other robots can trace a previous path or even follow a wall around until they reach their home, but the RX3 is a fumbler until it quits and sends a message of failure to your phone.
We also encountered issues with the smart features of the device, including its mapping feature and the digital stay-out zones. It was effective in keeping our furniture legs and shoes away, but it was easily hanging up on socks, cables, and rug. That's the reason we didn't choose to include it on our Best Buy list. The Scout RX3 offers a good price and a dazzling performance. It's worth a look as an alternative to uprights that are traditionally used.
